The Genesis Eldercare Hammonds Lane Nursing Center, 613 Hammonds Lane, will hold its annual spring flea market and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 17.
Visitors will be able to purchase a variety of white elephant items, attic treasures, household items and knick-knacks. There will also be a baked goods tables along with hot dogs, soft drinks and ice cream treats for sale during the event.
The proceeds will benefit the Resident Council Fund to help pay for its upcoming special events, community service projects outings and community food baskets. Donations of items for sale at the flea market will be accepted.

American Legion Post 187, 1527 Cherry St., will serve up hot steamed crabs on Wednesday from 4 p.m. until they are gone. The cost is either $1 to $2 per crab.
The post invites the public to its bingo games at 7 p.m. Fridays. The bingo night costs 25 cents per game.

Dinner and show
Mark the calendar for the 15th annual dinner and variety show to be held at the Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church at 5:30 p.m. May 17. The curtain for the variety show will go up at 7 p.m.
The dinner costs $12.50 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 10. The menu includes lasagna, salad, bread, dessert and a soft drink.

Post 34 events
The Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 34 will host a platter party at the post at 5526 Belle Grove Road from 2 to 6 p.m. May 17.
Tickets are $15 and include a dinner platter, draft beer, soft drinks, limited open bar, music and dancing.
Vendor spaces are still available for the post's flea market and yard sale to be held beginning at 8 a.m. June 7. Spaces cost $10. The post will sell pit beef throughout the day.

Help the arts center
The Chesapeake Arts Center will hold a volunteer recruitment and orientation meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Studio 194 Theatre, 194 Hammonds Lane.
Volunteer Coordinator Josh Feist and Executive Director Davina Grace Hill will take volunteers on a grand tour of the facility and describe the many opportunities available at the arts center.
Light refreshments will follow the orientation. No registration is required, though calls of intention to attend are appreciated.

Brooklyn Park seniors
The Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center, 202 Hammonds Lane, will offer a number of entertaining options for its members in the weeks ahead.
The center will screen the movie "The Water Horse" at 9:15 a.m. Monday. The movie tells the story of a lonely boy who discovers a large egg along the shore of Loch Ness. The egg soon hatches into the Loch's most famous and mysterious creature, and the boy finds it more and more difficult to keep the Loch's secret.
Walter Kerns will entertain activity center members with a variety of "oldies but goodies" from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. Visitors can sing along or just sit back and listen to toe-tapping favorites.
Members can cool off with an ice cream treat at the center from 12:30 to 1 p.m. May 19 during its old-fashioned ice cream social.
The center will sponsor a bus trip to the Charlestown Casino and Racetrack on May 20. The bus will leave the center's parking lot at 7:45 a.m. and return at approximately 4 p.m. The cost is $20.
To reserve a spot for the trip, members need to contact Patti Cho or Libby Hildt at the center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays or Fridays.
