After three days of rainouts postponed the Anne Arundel County tennis championships, the sun was certainly shining on Severna Park yesterday afternoon.
Severna Park squared off with rival Broadneck as the top two teams went into yesterday as the squads left vying for the title. Three wins in the finals pairings and one in the consolation round helped drive the Falcons to the county championship.
The girls' singles final pitted the old against the new. Senior Michele Jordan won the two previous singles titles, but a three-peat was not in the cards. Falcons freshman Christina Harrington knocked off Jordan for the second time this season.
"I was just trying to be more aggressive and keeping the ball to her backhand," Harrington said. "It was nice being the underdog and not having any pressure on me."
Harrington dropped the second set and things looked as if they would begin to unravel for the freshman. However, Jordan couldn't get aconsistent shot going, and Zimmerman was able to take advantage.
"We really wanted her to stay aggressive in this one," Severna Park coach Kathy Zingler. "She sometimes has a tendency to lay off a little without putting the other player away, but she did an excellent job in the third set."
Broadneck's Steve Woody took the boys' singles final in straight sets, defeating Annapolis' Morgan Joyce in dominant fashion. Woody allowed only three total set points and seemed in control throughout.
Zingler, the defending singles champion, joined Ben Rosenthal in doubles, and the tandem dominate the Broadneck pair after dropping the first set. Zach Hare and Brian Sachtjen were able to win the first set, but Severna Park kicked it in to an extra gear. Zingler and Rosenthal shut out their opponents in the final two sets to cruise to victory.
Arundel's Amy and Jenny Olson won their third consecutive girls' doubles championship after they took down Severna Park's Alex Paugels and Erica Johnson in straight sets.
Matt Balleza and Shelley Wilke of Severna Park defeated Broadneck's Eric Pederson and Victoria Handlin for the mixed doubles crown. That victory solidified the Falcons' team championship.
