OWINGS MILLS - McDonogh attackman Patrick Sartory scored the game-winning goal yesterday to leave 19 St. Mary's seniors huddled together on the sidelines for the final time.
Sartory scored his third goal with 1:14 left in the overtime period yesterday to lead McDonogh to a 6-5 victory over St. Mary's and into the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference semifinals.
"I thought our kids fought hard and played hard," Saints coach Matt Hogan said. "We did some things really well. It's a shame the season's over because we had very high expectations. We'll lose a lot of good kids and a lot of good players."
Matt Bell each scored twice and Matt Lamon notched a goal and an assist for St. Mary's (15-6), which held a 4-2 lead in the third quarter and scored late in the fourth to force overtime.
Saints goalkeeper Peter Stewart blocked Sartory's first shot in overtime, but he found the net on his second a minute later.
