The Historical Electronics Museum will participate in today's American Radio Relay League field day.
During the annual event, amateur radio operators compete and test their skills in the broadcast of a simulated emergency. The stations are set up at sites that don't have an existing broadcast infrastructure, Jim Nowotarski, president of the museum, explained in an e-mail.
Members of the museum's amateur radio club will set up operations at 7553 Wigley Ave. in Jessup, a location they've used for the past three years. Their objective is to broadcast for 24 hours and "make as many contacts on as many frequency bands and operating modes as possible," Mr. Nowotarski said.
In all, the club will operate six radio stations, including one that will be available for unlicensed members of the public to try out, he said.
Everyone is invited to visit the amateur radio operators during this weekend's event. At the site, club members will distribute information about their club, amateur radio and the Historical Electronics Museum.
HOPE yard sale
Families in Anne Arundel County will benefit from a big yard sale and sports card show at St. Philip Neri Church next month.
He Opens the Path to Everyone Inc. will sponsor the sale from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the sports card show from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on July 12. The event will be housed in the church hall and gym at 6405 S. Orchard Road.
There will be more than 30 tables selling merchandise "from A to Z," said HOPE organizer Leo Zerhusen. The card show will include more than 20 vendors selling sports cards.
All of the proceeds will help fund HOPE's efforts on behalf of county families in need of support.
For more information, call Mr. Zerhusen at 410-859-1297.
Paper airplanes
With BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport next door, it's a small wonder that airplanes would be on the mind of Linthicum residents.
Next month, a tradition in aeronautics continues when engineers young and old design their aircraft for the airplane rally at the Linthicum library, 400 Shipley Road. For the 10th year, paper airplane pilots will be able to test their craft on an obstacle course of mountains, clouds and bridges without leaving the meeting room at the library.
The rally will be held at 7 p.m. on July 31. Families are welcome.
The library will offer another traditional event from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 21 when it opens its sidewalks for all ages to participate in its annual chalk drawing. For more information, call the library at 410-222-6265.
Combined service
Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, 200 School Lane, will offer a combined worship service at 10 a.m. on July 6.
For details, call the church at 410-859-0990.
