State threatens lawsuit for Fort Meade contamination

The state of Maryland plans to sue the Army for failing to clean up environmental contamination at Fort George G. Meade.

Attorney General Doug Gansler and Environment Secretary Shari T. Wilson officially notified the Army this week of the state's intent to sue under a federal law called the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act that governs hazardous waste.

The citizen lawsuit can't be filed until at least 90 days after the notice was sent. In the meantime, the various parties could reach a settlement.
