One of the most intriguing one-off tribute bands to come along in a while is Still Black … The African Tribute to James Brown. This band features Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley of the original JBs, the horn section for the James Brown Revue joined by Senegalese singer-songwriter Cheikh Lo, British-Nigerian rapper Ty, Afro-beat king Tony Allen (King Sunny Ade) and Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Toure, son of the late Ala Farka Toure. There are corollaries between the popular and traditional sounds from the African continent and the derivative American styles that are funk, jazz and blues.
